It’s no secret that artificial intelligence, or AI, is changing the world that we live in. That includes the job market. Many people are worried that artificial intelligence could affect their job security or job prospects. With the rapid changes in technology, we are unsure of what the future has in store. It is completely understandable to feel this way.

But it’s important to remember, that sometimes change can be good. With the rapid advancements in technology, there are also new jobs being created. Meaning the job roles in your future career may not even exist yet!

Artificial intelligence in Greater Manchester

Manchester is the fastest growing digital community in Europe. Currently, there are many roles being advertised within the region, and there are no signs of this slowing down either.

Where would I begin?

Get educated! Although you may be naturally gifted with technology, gaining a qualification will be hugely beneficial. Even a natural talent needs to be nurtured.

Computer courses have been around for years. But these programs develop frequently to adapt to technological change. If you’re looking for pathways into the world of artificial intelligence within Greater Manchester, you’re in luck!

AI courses

Many colleges are offering technical courses that include lots of training on AI. It tends to be included under Digital Technologies or Computer Science courses. This may be an apprenticeship, T Level or A level. You may also be able to pursue specific short courses in artificial intelligence, perhaps focusing on specific uses of the new technology.

If you think a more academic route is for you, there are university courses that would include AI in their courses too.

Courses like Computer Science, Data Science, Game Design and Mechanical Engineering, usually include AI in their programs. Even some Mathematical and Physics courses include AI now. The University of Manchester are now specifically offering postgraduate course in artificial intelligence.

However, it’s important to remember, that when you work in technology you will spend your whole career constantly learning. Technology hasn’t stopped evolving and so to keep up with all the advancements you’ll need to keep on top of your knowledge.

What job roles are out there?

Jobs in technology can sometimes sound confusing. The roles themselves can sound complex and often reference specific technologies. To try and simplify what the people working these jobs actually do, here are some brief explanations of the most advertised jobs working directly with AI right now.

Business Analyst

If you love tech but also have a passion for business, this may be the job for you. As a Business Analyst, you’d examine data but in a business capacity. To thrive in this role, you’ll need a good knowledge of data and business. Your job is to find to find any issues, see what the business is doing well and help improve their business through your findings.

Data Scientist

A Data Scientist does a lot of similar tasks to a Business Analyst. But, if you enjoy the more tech side of the role, you’d be better off pursuing this pathway. Your job would be to analyse data and discover information that could help an organisation. However, in this role you’d be expected to fix technical issues too.

Data Engineer

Creating is also another element of technology. This is where Data Engineers enter the picture. Effectively their role is to collect and make data usable, so that data scientists and analysts can understand it more clearly. They build a home of sorts for the data and then look after it, and make sure it’s easy to work with.

Security Analyst

You’ve probably guessed what this role would entail, as there’s a clue in the title. As a security analyst, you’d be responsible for protecting the information of the organisation you work for. You’d do this by setting up ways to prevent groups or individuals getting access to data, and by fighting off any attacks that could happen. There are lots of high-profile hacks and data breaches in the news – in this role, you could be on the frontlines of defending against these criminal groups. Think of yourself as a cyber soldier.

What could be next?

A lot of roles that work with artificial intelligence can feel very similar, and that’s because they are. Their duties often overlap. Artificial intelligence is still a very new technology, and it’s not clear quite how much it’ll be used in different fields yet. So, if you want to be at the real forefront of a new technology, a career in AI could be for you!

The roles discussed in this article all specifically work with artificial intelligence. But there a variety of roles that incorporate this intelligence into their daily routines. As we mentioned earlier, there’s a good chance your future role in tech may not exist yet. So don’t be put off if these roles don’t sound exciting to you. Keep your eyes peeled and your imagination open, and perhaps your future career in tech will become more clearer over time!
