Maintenance, Installation and Repair for Engineering and Manufacturing with Murphy (Energy Business Unit)
This placement will be based in our Energy Business Unit out of our Stonecross Office.

About the placement
As part of this placement, you will get involved in:
- Undertaking Health and Safety training concerning working in and around construction sites
- Shadowing experienced Site Engineers in their day to day duties concerning the installation, testing and commissioning of mechanical gas installation on our natural gas pipeline, AGI, compressor station and LNG Terminal projects.
- Helping to compile quality record documentation for handover to customers.
- Reviewing and developing an appreciation of detailed design drawings produced by Murphy Applied Engineering design engineer land/or external design consultants.
- Learning the basics of CAD drawing packages such as Autodesk to produce 2D drawings.
- Performing and checking material quantity takes-offs from drawings by producing excel spreadsheets.
- Assisting in the production of weld maps
- Assisting in document control and design coordination of projects
Mechanical Engineering placements would be allocated a suitably qualified and experienced mentor / manager for the duration of their placement with Murphy. They would be introduced, onboarded, and supported by their mentor throughout their placement who would also act as their line manager, assuming responsibility for the individual’s welfare, and providing supervision and pastoral support.
All required IT will be provided for the individual, with access to the relevant internal murphy systems, intranet, and software packages necessary for the activities they will be undertaking.
Placement students would be introduced to Engineering roles in Murphy through vocational exercises, briefed by the individuals line manager which are intended to mimic typical engineering activities and deliverables.
Mechanical Engineering placements will vary by individual, depending on office/project location and the experience / capabilities of the placement student. The intention is that the individual leaves the placement with a deeper understanding of the typical roles, responsibilities and expectations for working as an Engineer within a contracting organisation and gains technical and soft skills required to work in a professional environment. This is achieved by undertaking simulated engineering activities under the supervision of Senior Engineers. Broadly, this would result from tasks designed to mimic a live project deliverables and activities. Primarily this will involve the review of technical specifications, reports and documents, and undertake a series of tasks intended to test their understanding of the subject matter, and ability to apply the theory of into a practical application.

About the T Level – Maintenance, Installation and Repair for Engineering and Manufacturing
During the 2-year programme, students will develop the core knowledge and skills that are needed for entry to a range of maintenance, installation and repair occupations.
This course is suitable for anyone interested in a career in maintenance, installation and repair for engineering and manufacturing.
Students will develop an understanding of a broad range of issues relevant to the sector, including:
- working within the Engineering and Manufacturing Sectors – an understanding of how materials, conditions and context influence design processes and products
- essential mathematics for engineering and manufacturing – a knowledge and understanding of mathematics including standard matrices and determinants and standard trigonometry
- materials and their properties – understanding material processing techniques and their effects on materials and material quality, the condition of materials, how these are managed, and materials testing methods and techniques
- business, commercial and financial awareness – basic commercial principles including commercial priorities and markets, customers/clients/partners and resource allocation
